UN delegation meets Ohanaeze Ndigbo over biafra Republic
The delegation led by a special representative of Secretary-General of UN, Ambassador Mohamed Ibn Chambas, met, yesterday, behind closed doors in Enugu, with the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo led by its President-General, Chief Nnia Nwodo. Other chieftains of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, who met with the delegation included Deputy President-General and former deputy governor of Ebonyi State, Prof. Chigozie Ogbu; Enugu State President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Alex Ogbonnia; Dr. Ifedi Okwenna; and chairman of Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, Amb. Lawrence Agubuzor, among others. Addressing newsmen on their mission, the UN representatives, Amb. Chambas said they came to commend the Ohanaeze leadership on the manner the body was able to stem the tide of wavering Nigeria’s unity at its crisis point. Chambas said the UN was recently worried about developments in Nigeria, particularly in the South-East, noting, however, that the UN Secretary-General, Mr. Antonio Guterres, stands for a united Nigeria where human rights are respected and not trampled upon. Chambas said: “We indeed came to commend them for the leadership they have demonstrated.
Few months ago, we were all getting a bit worried with events and developments in the South-East of Nigeria but thanks to their leadership and their initiatives, they were able to bring together the chiefs and the political leaders and governors and respected persons of South-East and through this intervention, we now see that calm is restored and all are working to advance the one Nigeria agenda.

In this interview, he speaks on his chances at the poll, and the state of affairs in the state among other issues. Excerpts
What is your assessment of the APGA government?
I wouldn’t want to start by criticising Governor Willie Obiano so that it won’t look as if I am talking because I am contesting against him. But I want a situation where the masses will tell me that I am working. If Willie is actually working, the masses will know and advertise for him.

Kenya’s lecturers launched a strike over unfulfilled pay deal
Kenyan lecturers in public universities have launched a strike to protest against what they call the government’s continued failure to implement a March deal to boost salaries and housing allowances.
The strike piles pressure on the government after a strike by nurses in public hospitals over the past few months has paralyzed health care services countrywide. It also worsens the plight of more than half a million students in 31 public universities, since the lecturers ended a 54-day strike over pay in February and signed a pact with the government in March. “All academic staff at the 31 public universities are on strike from Nov. 1,” Constantine Wasonga, secretary-general of the University Academic Staff Union, said in a statement seen by Reuters on Thursday. “The strike remains in force until the collective bargaining agreement is implemented in total.” The agreement provided for a pay hike of 17.5 per cent and an increase of 3.9 per cent in house allowances.

Zimbabwe Government set to restore hanging of criminals
President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe says he wants the country to start hanging criminals again, 12 years after it stopped it.
The Zimbabwean leader said on Wednesday in Harare that
“in spite of having a system of capital punishment, with more than 90 inmates currently on death row, no executions have been carried out since 2005.
“And the country does not even have a working hangman.
“I have always supported death penalty but Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa says it’s a bad thing.“If you see the resumption of executions, you should know that my idea has prevailed.”
The 93-year-old president’s remarks were a thinly veiled dig at Mnangagwa, seen as possible successor to the longtime leader, though Mugabe was said to favour his wife, Grace, for the position.
